Mary’s paintings are a reflection of her love of Hawaii, the tropics and Polynesia. Her work is bold and enthusiastic like the subjects she portrays. She works in oils and watercolors along with a variety of printmaking technique. Mary’s work has been featured in numerous shows in the State of Hawaii. She was selected as one of the Hawaii artists to watch by THE Magazine in Santa Fe and her work was featured at the Galeria Arriba in Abiquiu, NM. Her tropical murals can be seen in along the Kohala Coast and the West Coast.
Her popular Slippahs and Aloha Shirt woodblock prints are prime examples of the Japanese style woodblock printing she favors. In addition to woodblock, Mary works in monoprinting and photopolymer etching.
Sumi-e painting with a giant horsehair brush is an offshoot of Mary’s study of Japanese swordsmanship. The practice combines meditation techniques, full-body movement and painting. Sessions are several hours long and a little like a jam session.
Mary teaches art at the Four Seasons Hualalai in conjunction with artist, Peter Kowalke. Their program runs during holidays and summer months and includes drawing, painting, monoprinting, and collage. She has taught art workshops at Parker School, the Waimea Arts Council and HPA for adults and children in drawing, painting and printmaking. She has created a variety of corporate programs at the Four Seasons and the Fairmont Orchid featuring multiple artists in conjunction with Mary Charles and Associates.
Currently she serves on the Art In Sight Board where her interest in education, art and health come together. Additionally, she is on the Board of the Aston Paradigm Corporation.
